DiksmuideNotary Office and Multifamily Residence, Oostendestraat – Handzamedijk, Diksmuide
A new building has been completed at the corner of Oostendestraat and Handzamedijk in Diksmuide, seamlessly uniting living and working spaces. The project combines a notary’s office on the ground floor with six apartments on the upper floors, creating a distinctive landmark at the northern entrance to the city.
The offices on the ground floor are designed as an open, light-filled workspace with meeting rooms, an open-plan office, and common areas. Large glass walls bring the greenery deep into the interior. On the south side, a wooden terrace connects to a reed-lined wadi, which collects and infiltrates rainwater. In this way, water management is integrated into the architecture and landscaping.
The apartments on the first and second floors each feature a well-thought-out layout and spacious, south-facing terraces. The entrance to the residential section is sheltered in the inner corner of the building and is clearly marked on the facade. Each apartment enjoys plenty of light, views, and privacy, giving the complex a pleasant living environment within a compact design.

The design draws inspiration from the site’s unique location between the urban Oostendestraat and the rural Handzamedijk along the Handzame Canal. At this transition between city and landscape, the aim was to create architecture that brings both atmospheres together: urban in its design, yet gently integrated into the green dike landscape.
The building consists of an L-shaped, three-story volume, featuring horizontal articulation and a carefully crafted rhythm of concrete lines, masonry, and wooden slats. The light, nuanced brick and bronze-colored joinery create a warm, timeless appearance. The facades open toward the south and west, where large windows enhance the view of the greenery. On the more closed-off north facade, the openings are limited to respect the privacy of the neighbors.
