PANORAMIC HOUSE S&V

Hooglede

Anchored in the landscape

On the flank of the Gitsberg, an existing zoned house is rebuilt with respect for its original position in the landscape. Its location in second line along Kandelaarstraat offers exceptional views of Roeselare, but at the same time requires restraint and landscape integration.

The design departs from compactness. House and annexe are brought together into a clear ensemble organized around a sheltered outdoor space. Not the object, but the spatial relationship with the open field is central.

The architecture opts for tranquility, proportion and embedding rather than expression.

By keeping the house low and horizontal, its presence on the ridge remains discreet. Openings are strategically positioned to frame the panorama while ensuring security.

The exterior landscaping also follows the same logic of reduction and reinforcement. Pavement is reduced, existing structures remain defining, and the yard is organized as one cohesive functional zone.

This creates a contemporary home that does not claim the landscape, but is part of it.

Site

The project site is located in second building line on Gitsberg, embedded in an open agricultural landscape of fields and pastures. The north side of the parcel is bordered by existing hedges of adjacent properties, creating a relatively closed edge.

To the south, the site opens up completely, creating wide views of Roeselare and the rolling landscape. The surroundings are characterized by scattered buildings: detached and semi-detached houses with a variety of roof shapes, including several low volumes with flat roofs.

The openness, wind sensitivity and lack of pronounced building clusters make landscape incorporation essential here.

Concept

The house will be designed as a one-story bungalow volume with a flat roof. This choice is consistent with existing typologies in the vicinity and limits the visual impact on the hillside.

Through its low, horizontal profile, the volume blends into the relief. The scale remains controlled and in proportion to the surrounding buildings.

The annex supports the legibility of the whole and completes the spatial enclosure of the courtyard, creating a compact and balanced ensemble.

Layout

The new house and outbuilding will be re-planted according to the 75% rule, maintaining the original footprint and orientation between them. The existing L-shaped main volume is the starting point for a rational reconstruction.

Both volumes are brought together to form a compact building cluster that organizes itself around a courtyard. This configuration creates a lee place within the open field and provides a clear transition between yard and landscape.

The positioning is geared to maximum orientation toward the valuable views, while the north side is more closed. The implantation thus enhances both privacy and panoramic quality.

Architectural choices

The architecture does not seek contrast, but resonance with its context. Materialization and detailing are inspired by the surrounding wooded banks, hedgerows and agricultural structures.

Openings are carefully positioned to frame the panorama without fragmenting the facades. The house shows itself restrained on the outside and generous in its relationship to the landscape.

Materials are selected for their natural aging and their ability to visually anchor themselves in the environment. This creates a contemporary home that does not stand as an object on the hill, but is a natural part of it.
