HoogledeSTORAGE SPACES AND OFFICE FOR THE NEW RECYCLING PARK OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF HOOGLEDE
A new recycling park is being built on the “Oude Steenbakkerij” site on Hogestraat, complete with an accompanying warehouse for storage and covered container parking to support the park’s operations. The repurposing of the site is part of the redevelopment of an abandoned site and provides space for the recycling park, the technical department, storage, the parks and recreation department, and a truck parking lot.

Location
The site is located on the Vossenberg and is visible from the Hogestraat access road. The recycling park will be situated in the northeastern part of the site, while an existing natural forest on the western side will be preserved, adjacent to a truck parking lot.
A circulation road will be built around this parking lot, connecting to the new roundabout north of the site and providing access to the recycling park. Along Hogestraat, a green buffer zone with an infiltration system will be created to visually screen the recycling park from the street.
The new warehouse will be located between this buffer zone and the recycling park. The design aimed for a clear and rational layout of the site, with a focus on ensuring easy access to both the recycling park and the storage warehouse.
The new warehouse will feature a sloped roof, with sections on both the north and south sides designed as green roofs. The building’s cornice height is 4.53 m, and the maximum ridge height is 8.68 m. The building includes various storage rooms, a storage area for the container park, a mechanical room, and a protected space for the park attendant with the necessary amenities. In addition, an outdoor canopy is provided for the container park.
Architecture and Materialization
The building is conceived as a simple volume with an agricultural typology that blends into the landscape of the hill. The structure is left exposed and defines the rhythm of the building, which aligns with the layout of 10 storage rooms.
The shed features a gently sloping roof with overhanging canopies on all sides, providing shelter for storage and activities beneath the roof. An offset in the volume allows northern light to enter under the canopy and into the storage areas.
The supporting structure consists of a black steel framework with black concrete panels and black exterior joinery. This dark material palette contrasts with the gently sloping green roof, allowing the building to blend subtly into the landscape.
Sustainability
The project focuses on strong integration into the landscape and a rational, flexible structure. Part of the roof is designed as a green roof, while the south-facing roof surface accommodates solar panels.
Rainwater from the roof is collected and reused within the building and the recycling park. Excess water infiltrates through a wadi next to the building, maximizing groundwater recharge.
