WYSEUR WOODWORKS

Oostnieuwkerke

Extension carpentry workshop

On the edge of the industrial park De Rootputten in Oostnieuwkerke, Markland Architects realized the expansion of Wyseur Woodworks, a young and ambitious joinery with an eye for precision and craftsmanship. Since the first construction phase in 2012, the family business has grown steadily, with a clear vision of quality, sustainability and spatial cohesion. The recent expansion expands the workshop with a new shed of some 600 m², which seamlessly connects to the existing buildings and the company home.

Wyseur Woodworks' expansion illustrates how craft and architecture can reinforce each other. Combining rational business logic with refined materiality, the project demonstrates how contemporary industrial construction can be simultaneously sustainable, efficient and aesthetic.

Project information

The site is located at the transition between the business park and an adjacent residential area, separated by a green buffer with water feature and bike path. This peripheral position makes the company not only a production site, but also a visual and spatial mediating element between industry and housing.

The house is integrated into the whole and is sheltered at the rear of the plot, overlooking the green zone. The building was deliberately kept simple: a clear, rectangular extension that continues the existing structure while reinforcing it. The addition of two meters of extra building height creates more storage capacity without taking up additional land. The architecture remains true to the original character of the company: functional, honest and with refined detailing.

The facades are constructed of reclaimed wood panels, carefully modulated so that each panel could be reused unchanged - an exercise in dimensional consistency and circularity. The result is a rhythmic facade image that exudes warmth and craftsmanship, contrasting with the austere concrete and black aluminum accents. The extension reads like a contemporary interpretation of industrial architecture, combining tactility and efficiency.

On the street side, the building is opened up: large panoramic windows bring daylight deep into the office space and strengthen the relationship with the surroundings. The cantilever over the entrance forms both an architectural accent and a functional canopy volume - a sheltered place for visitors and deliveries. The new central entrance makes circulation clear and recognizable, while the covered loading area can be used simultaneously as a terrace area for staff.

Inside, the warehouse is organized with a logical separation between production, storage and personnel areas. A mezzanine and light structure create additional user surface and provide visual connection between the different work zones. Using transparent facade sections on the long sides creates lateral daylight without direct light nuisance; wooden slats act as sunshades and filter the incoming light.

The materialization is deliberately limited to wood, concrete, glass and black aluminum - robust, low-maintenance materials that underscore the company's artisanal character. Together with the existing volumes, the new shed forms a coherent whole, with a sober but expressive language of form.
