THE GREEN HEART
RoeselareGreen campus for living and care
A mixed-use project is being developed on the Heilig Hart site in Roeselare, bringing together care, housing and hospitality. The program includes a residential care center, care apartments and additional functions to meet the needs of residents and the neighborhood. The project is positioned as a new landmark in the city center.
The development is part of a wider green masterplan for the area, which will also reopen the Mandel and integrate it into the urban fabric.

The site
This site has been dedicated to healthcare since 1924. The redevelopment of the abandoned hospital will give the site a new future in which life and care will once again take center stage.
Replacing the hospital's imposing volume with separate buildings of varying height and scale creates space for a public park of around 2 hectares. This park will be the central landscape feature of the new district.
The site will be softened by 72%. This creates a distinctly green environment in which cyclists and pedestrians have priority. A traffic-free corridor follows the course of the Collie pond and links the Meensesteenweg to the Westlaan.
Development
The first phase of the project comprises three contiguous building blocks with varying heights of four, eight and sixteen storeys. At the center of the project is a high-rise volume with rounded corners that reconciles different types of housing.
Sixty apartments will be built in the three fossil-free buildings, along with neighborhood-enhancing functions such as a local service center and a residential hotel. The residential hotel combines 110 care studios and 27 assisted-living apartments. It will include a takeaway bistro on the first floor, overlooking the new park.
Although the functions are intertwined, the apartments, residential hotel and retirement homes will each retain their own identity and access from the park.
Two underground parking levels will provide a total of 180 parking spaces, directly linked to the building by an elevator.
The concept
The project is part of a sustainable redevelopment that brings together care, residential and community functions within a single structure. The combination of different building heights, rounded corners and large glazed surfaces creates a modern, timeless ensemble that gives an impression of lightness.
The new park serves as a connecting element between the various volumes and forms the heart of the district.
